An Architecture to Support Learning-based Adaptation of Persistent Queries in Mobile Environments

    Get PDF
Queries are frequently used by applications in dynamically formed mobile networks to discover and acquire information and services available in the surrounding environment. A number of inquiry strategies exist, each of which embodies an approach to disseminating a query and collecting results. The choice of inquiry strategy has different tradeoffs under different operating conditions. Therefore, it is beneficial to allow a query-based application to dynamically adapt its inquiry strategy to the changing environmental conditions. To promote development by non-expert domain programmers, we can automate the decision-making process associated with adapting the inquiry strategy. In this paper, we propose an architecture to support automated adaptative query processing for dynamic mobile environments. The decision-support module of our architecture relies on an instance-based learning approach to support context-aware adaptation of the inquiry strategy

Adaptive network protocols to support queries in dynamic networks

Recent technological advancements have led to the popularity of mobile devices, which can dynamically form wireless networks. In order to discover and obtain distributed information, queries are widely used by applications in opportunistically formed mobile networks. Given the popularity of this approach, application developers can choose from a number of implementations of query processing protocols to support the distributed execution of a query over the network. However, different inquiry strategies (i.e., the query processing protocol and associated parameters used to execute a query) have different tradeoffs between the quality of the query's result and the cost required for execution under different operating conditions. The application developer's choice of inquiry strategy is important to meet the application's needs while considering the limited resources of the mobile devices that form the network. We propose adaptive approaches to choose the most appropriate inquiry strategy in dynamic mobile environments. We introduce an architecture for adaptive queries which employs knowledge about the current state of the dynamic mobile network and the history of previous query results to learn the most appropriate inquiry strategy to balance quality and cost tradeoffs in a given setting, and use this information to dynamically adapt the continuous query's execution

For the purpose of screening putative anthracnose resistance-related genes of ramie (Boehmeria nivea L. Gaud), a cDNA library was constructed by suppression subtractive hybridization using anthracnose-resistant cultivar Huazhu no. 4. The cDNAs from Huazhu no. 4, which were infected with Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, were used as the tester and cDNAs from uninfected Huazhu no. 4 as the driver. Sequencing analysis and homology searching showed that these clones represented 132 single genes, which were assigned to functional categories, including 14 putative cellular functions, according to categories established for Arabidopsis. These 132 genes included 35 disease resistance and stress tolerance-related genes including putative heat-shock protein 90, metallothionein, PR-1.2 protein, catalase gene, WRKY family genes, and proteinase inhibitor-like protein. Partial disease-related genes were further analyzed by reverse transcription PCR and RNA gel blot. These expressed sequence tags are the first anthracnose resistance-related expressed sequence tags reported in ramie

Visual Analytics is the science of applying reasoning and analysis techniques to large, complex real-world data for problem solving using visualizations. Real world knowledge gathering and investigative tasks are very complex because the problem-solving context is constantly evolving, and the data may be incomplete, unreliable and/or conflicting. We describe a mixed-initiative reasoning agent that will assist investigative analysts to choose from and reason about enormous databases of text, imagery, video and webcast. This agent leverages an AI blackboard system and resourcebounded control mechanisms to support hypothesis tracking and validation in a highly uncertain environment. Interactive visualizations will enable analysts to gather and sift large amounts of evidence and to collaborate with and, wher

A Visco-Hyperelastic Constitutive Model to Characterize the Stress-Softening Behavior of Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer Rubber

    No full text
Uniaxial and biaxial cyclic tensile tests and stress relaxation tests were performed on the ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) material to investigate its stress-softening effect. The experimental results reveal that the EPDM material presents a significant Mullins effect during the cyclic stretching processes. Furthermore, it is found that the deformation of the EPDM material does not return to zero simultaneously with the stress, due to the viscoelasticity of the EPDM material. Therefore, this study combines pseudo-elasticity theory and viscoelastic theory to propose a visco-hyperelastic constitutive model. The proposed model is used to fit and analyze the uniaxial and biaxial cyclic test results of EPDM and a comparison is conducted with the corresponding hyper-elastic constitutive model. The results show that the proposed model is in good agreement with the experimental data and superior to the hyper-elastic constitutive model, especially when it comes to the stress-softening unloading process. This work is conducive to accurately characterizing the stress-softening behavior of rubber-like materials at large deformation and can provide some theoretical guidance for their widespread application in industry

Direct Interaction of Coronavirus Nonstructural Protein 3 with Melanoma Differentiation-Associated Gene 5 Modulates Type I Interferon Response during Coronavirus Infection

Coronavirus nonstructural protein 3 (nsp3) is a multi-functional protein, playing a critical role in viral replication and in regulating host antiviral innate immunity. In this study, we demonstrate that nsp3 from severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and avian coronavirus infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) directly interacts with melanoma differentiation-associated gene 5 (MDA5), rendering an inhibitory effect on the MDA5-mediated type I interferon (IFN) response. By the co-expression of MDA5 with wild-type and truncated nsp3 constructs, at least three interacting regions mapped to the papain-like protease (PLpro) domain and two other domains located at the N- and C-terminal regions were identified in SARS-CoV-2 nsp3. Furthermore, by introducing point mutations to the catalytic triad, the deubiquitylation activity of the PLpro domain from both SARS-CoV-2 and IBV nsp3 was shown to be responsible for the suppression of the MDA5-mediated type I IFN response. It was also demonstrated that both MDA5 and nsp3 were able to interact with ubiquitin and ubiquitinated proteins, contributing to the interaction between the two proteins. This study confirms the antagonistic role of nsp3 in the MDA5-mediated type I IFN signaling, highlighting the complex interaction between a multi-functional viral protein and the innate immune response

Objective. The objective of this study was to explore the medicinal properties of herbal medicines that can interfere with the copper death pathway. Methods. The Human Gene Database, Chemical Interactions in Comparative Toxicogenomics Database, Encyclopedia of Traditional Chinese Medicine, China Medical Information Platform, and Cytoscape software were used to find target and chemicals that interfere with copper death targets, as well as herbal medicines containing these chemicals and their four natures and five flavors (basic properties of herbal medicines). Results. 27 copper death-related targets were finally retrieved, as well as 2143 chemicals that could interfere with them, including 180 herbal compounds. The compounds with the highest degree values (number of nodes connected to this node) were folic acid, resveratrol, and quercetin. The 180 compounds were related to 278 herbs; those with the highest degree values (number of nodes connected to this node) were Jujubae Fructus, Ginkgo biloba L, and Acanthopanax senticosus. The 27 copper death targets were indirectly associated with 278 herbs; those with the highest degree values (number of nodes connected to this node) were Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, Polygonum cuspidatum Sieb. et Zucc, and Mori Folium. Among the 278 herbs, 6 had incomplete information. A pharmacological analysis showed that among the 272 Chinese herbs, the most frequent meridians were the liver (133), lung (104), and spleen (91). Of the four natures, the most frequent were cold (73), warm (68), and flat (45). Of the five flavors, the most frequent were bitter (165), pungent (116), and sweet (99). Conclusion. This study preliminarily discussed the material basis and medicinal properties of herbs that can intervene in copper death, which can provide reference for the theoretical discussion, drug development, and clinical research of Chinese medicine regulating copper death
